avocado milkshake

It may sound utterly strange to you, but to me... it is oh so good!
avocado milkshake
In a blender put:
- almost 1/2 of an avocado
- 1 cup of fat free milk (that avocado is already loaded up on fat)
- 1/4 water
- 4-5 ice cubes
- 2 tbsp sugar (or to taste, cause you might like it sweeter than I do)

Mix on high until completely blended. Add a few tiny chunks inside, if you like. Serve and drink.

It is so delicious and creamy. This isn't some strange combo that came about from my pregnancy, my mom has been making me this drink since I was a little girl. Maybe it is some filipino thing, but I am not really sure. Ben thinks it is so strange. Avocado and sugar just sounds very odd to him, but not to me!

When lunch time rolls around, I am usually at a loss at what to eat. Everything sounds bad and I am stuck with a growling stomach. This has resulted in the making of one these milkshakes. It gets me through that lunch slump! Actually, when I was pregnant with Soulie I think I had one of these almost every night towards the end of my pregnancy. The avocado milkshake never fails me!

What's your favorite milkshake? I really love avocado ones, but my ultimate favorite are the oreo milkshakes! Now, those are super yum!

  1. Ruby! You can do avocados, bananas, milk, and a little bit of sugar. It's super duper yummy.

  2. steph- hm... never tried that. but i am not a banana milkshake fan because bananas come out so strong. but i will give it a try before i say no. thanks!

  3. I think it is Filipino as I remember a girl from work doing this milkshake although I have also heard Brazilians do a milkshake like that too!

  4. It probably is a Filipino thing... I remember my dad making us avocado milkshakes. So good! Now I have tarocado (taro & avocado) slushies with boba from my fave bubble tea place.

Love the new blog banner! =)

  5. Hmm. I love avocados, but I'm not sure about a shake. I should give it a try, right? When I was pregnant I craved chocolate soy milk all the time. I would sneak some decaf coffee in it and I could get through the day. :)

  6. According to my mother in law (who immigrated here from the Philippines during the 1970s), avocado is considered a desert fruit. She feeds it to Audrey with sugar and condensed milk. However, Lee's Sandwiches also serves avocado milkshakes, so maybe it's an Asian/Pacific Islander thing!

  9. I love avocado milkshake! I'm Filipina and avocado shake is commonly served in restaurants here. I also love avocado icecream. It's creamy and simply delicious. :) Yes, it is true that here in the Philippines, avocado is a dessert fruit! :) Thanks for sharing this post.

  10. My mom and mother in law make that all the time and I love it! They use evaporated milk (which probably) isnt so healthy but it sure does taste yummy!

My friend from malaysia eats something similar but it's with chunks of ice and avocado.

  11. Very interesting!! I looove avocados so I will definitely be trying this. I would have never thought of them as a sweet treat. That's whats so great about different cultures... so many new ideas! :)

  12. ummm, i'm with linda.

i prefer my shakes to be made from chocolate and ice cream and more chocolate. thanks. :)

  13. I used to work in a Chinese-owned bubble tea shop and we made avocado milkshakes! I was a little suspicious but they are really yummy! So sweet and creamy... Mmmm. We also had something called Egg&Honey which was honey, egg yolk and some other things... A very good pick me up!

  17. A vietnamese restaurant we have in our town serves avocado milkshakes. I thought they sounded funny too, but my filipino husband made me try one and it was delicious. I'll have to inform him that it's a filipino thing-I don't think he knew that-he must have been drawn to it because it's in his blood!

  18. I read something a while back about how in Brazil (I think) avocado is considered a desert. Back then I couldn't believe people would eat this as a dessert, but now I see it is very common with all the comments on here.

Glad to see that is soothes you :)

  19. Too funny! My mom used to make Avocado Ice Cream when I was younger and I loved it! As I was reading this I was thinking "maybe it's a Filipino thing"... and then you said it. I guess it is. I had no idea. I just thought my mom made it up all these years. :)

my dad use to make us avocado ice cream and I'll be visiting him this weekend so now I think we'll have to make some or try the milkshake version. yummy!

  23. It's a Southeast Asian desert! The Indonesian way is to add palm sugar instead of regular sugar. It's richer in taste, and gives a nice colour to your avocado shake :)

  24. Just found your blog and absolutely love it!
The fact that you are attending your fourth child and still looking that great and giving a feeling of happiness and harmonic in your post, I salute you for that. Our second baby is arriving in May and just having one little daughter (1and a half) means chaos sometimes.

  25. oh yes! I make an avacodo milkshake about 3 times a week for lunch- SOOO good! Only I leave out the ice and water, and add a little bit of vanilla, and sometimes a banana, if there's one about to go bad. I can't get enough of them- YUM!

  26. My husband went to the Philippines a few years ago and came home talking about the strangest milkshake he had ever had, but proclaimed how amazingly wonderful it was, and it was avocado with sweetened condensed milk, and he wasn't even a fan of avocado! I need to try it sometime as he often raves about its yumminess.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I have friends here who make those all the time! A layer comes in a lot of cafe cocktails too.

  28. I was just talking to my friend about the different ways you could have avocados! She said she'd heard of avocado ice cream & milkshakes & I was convinced she was lying! hehehe :P
i absolutely love avocados - usually just as is or on toast! I haven't been game to try the milkshake...but I might have to give it a try!
(I think it's the colour that puts me off...at least that's what i'm telling myself! hehe)

  29. Yum! I love avocado milkshakes with a banana thrown in! Also, one time I have avocado ice cream with bits of pistachios and fresh strawberries in it. So pretty and delicious too.

  30. This is way better-for-you than my malt cravings I get when I'm pregnant.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Not strange at all. My personal favorite is a banana, avocado strawberry and orange juice smoothie. I think if you poured your shake into an ice cream maker and let it do its thing you would enjoy the result as well.

  33. ohmigoodness ruby, that doesn't sound good at all! love avaocado's but I don't know about in a milkshake, haha. I do like oreo ones, you know, good items that are meant to go into a shake ;)

  34. Never tried but I think I might!

  35. My pregnant cousin from Indonesia has a similar favorite preggo treat (which i love even though i'm not preg). avocado, banana, almond milk smoothie, finished with a swirl of hershey's syrup... Irresistable and mostly healthy!

  36. So interesting...I have never thought of avocado as a 'sweet' food, but lately I have been seeing things like avocado pie, avocado ice cream and your milkshake! Maybe I should give it a try!?

  37. My kids love a "smoothie" made with:

    1/2+ avocado,
    1 chopped apple,
a couple big handfuls of fresh spinach,
and just enough white grape juice to make it smooth.

I pour it through a sieve to get out some spinach pulp. It is DELICIOUS, surprisingly light and sweet, & gets my kids to eat 2 things they never would otherwise: spinach and avocado!

  38. So funny that you posted this as I've been LOVING avocados lately! While following a nutritional type diet, they list avocados as "fruit" so maybe that's why it does make a good sweetened shake. Stevia would be a better sweetener if you don't want the glycemic rise of sugar. I will have to try this!

  39. You're on an avocado kick this week, Ruby!

Funny enough I tried avocados again for the first time in a while this week and I didn't like it. I think maybe I don't know how to pick them well because when my mom picks them I'll have a slice and I enjoy it.

  40. If you love the shake, I think you'll love the ice cream! Or you can just pour your shake onto those popsicle things and have avocado popsicle any time you want :)

    ReplyDelete
  41. debbie- that idea is genius! must get one of those popsicle thingies! do you know a good one which is bpa free and safe to put in the freezer?

popsicles will be on our spring and summer snack list!!!

  43. psper-charmed- corn shake?!! tell me about this corn shake business. i think i might like that too!

    ReplyDelete
  44. yummie, it must be an asian thing. vietnamese have the same thing too. sometimes my mom use condense milk instead of regular milk. then you can skip the sugar. my husband think is nasty since he doesn't like avocado but i LOVE it. best serve when it sits in the fridge for a few hours, really cool & fresh snack in the summer. thanks for posting ruby. hope you feel better! xoxo

  45. Yes, corn shake! It's so good. Ice, milk, corn (fresh or from the can), sugar - and you're good to go :). Try it and let me know.

    ReplyDelete
  46. paper-charmed- thanks! will try it maybe for dinner! i hope i have corn on hand. my mom also made something called maiz con helo, which is corn with milk but not blended, so i am almost positive i will love this too! can't wait!!!! xoxo

  49. Yes! Avocado + milk + sugar are so ingrained in my (Filipino) taste buds, I forget that most people equate avocado with guacamole, only! My variations of the shake/smoothie include adding plain Greek yogurt, using agave nectar instead of sugar, and subbing regular milk w/rice, almond, or even coconut milk.

  50. without a doubt, the best milkshake in the world is the Nutella shake in Atlanta's Flip Burger Boutique!!!!

    it is my very favorite!!!

    burnt marshmallows on top, yum.

(they also have krispy kreme and turtle and on and on...the best!)

  51. I lived in Brazil for a while and learned how to drink these shakes. It's good if you add a little vanilla too. And bananas.
If you want to be sneaky (for kids) add spinach. My kids like it.

  52. My ma is Filipino and we used to eat avocado with cream and sugar for dessert. Have never met anyone else that eats anything like that though!

  57. Hi rubyellen! Yes! avocado ice cream! haha. It's not very common in the supermarkets here in Phils. but I went to this resto, Brazil Brazil, last December and they had the most delicious avocado ice cream. Quezo ice cream is pretty much common here too. And i love cheese icecream as much as i love avocado ice cream. :)
