edible crafting

If you have kids, you know you have to be creative. They don't want to do the same 'ole, same 'ole everyday, so you have to be able to think of something fun to engage them. And kids aren't hard to please either the other day I took some melted milk chocolate, marshmallows, warmed sunflower butter (cause True is allergic to dairy), toothpicks, and we had a grand 'ole time making and eating!

The simplest things can be fun and pretty at the same time. I am sure you have those things lying around your house, so if you need a quick project one afternoon, go at it!

I first saw marshmallow goodies at this fun party. It wasn't an activity, but just a little snack, but I thought those were too cute and yummy looking to not make with the kids. Hmm... now I think these will be next cause I have some homemade doughnut dough stashed away in the freezer!

Anyone have any other quick and fun projects to do with kids? I would love to hear all about it.

  5. Such fun! We love chocolate covered marshmallows over here as well, and we also love caramel covered marshmallows, dipped in chocolate, then covered in sprinkles as well. :)
I just did a neat project with my daughter yesterday making homemade salt scrubs.

  11. When I was little we used to play with edible playdough! It was really fun to make figures and then eat them.
Also, my grandma would let us play with uncooked rice! She'd spread a big sheet on the kitchen floor and pour a bunch of rice onto it. We'd use containers and shovels and sieves, and we had a great time! She'd save the rice so we could keep reusing it. It's like an indoor sandbox!

  14. Looks yummy!

While I'm thinking about how edibleness makes projects that much beter, one thing I've done as a Sunday School student and teacher is edible playdough. Just take peanut butter and mix it with powdered sugar until its a good consistency for playing with. If it's too sticky it needs more sugar. Of course that ones very unhealthy, but definitely engages the senses.

And then there's cornstarch mixed with water. It creates the best "goop around". Stick it in a pan and just play with it in your hands. We were always asking to "play with goop" when we were little-- my occupational therapist mom was always all for these tactile experiences. :)

  17. I'm beginning to suspect that my 10 month old is allergic to dairy. he is breastfed, and has done fine with breast milk, but can't tolerate yogurt or cheese. I've stopped giving him those things, but I'm not sure if his system just isn't ready or he is allergic. How did you discover that True is allergic to dairy?
Oh, and we are totally making these marshmallows. My kids are going to freak!

  22. Friendship rocks or good luck rocks! I just did some with my 4 and almost 2yr old. I sprayed the rocks with primer and we used permanent markers to draw on them. You could easily switch to acrylics too for the older kids. They are great to set in the garden or potted plants or to gift.

  24. My youngest saw this post while I was reading and said "we HAVE to make those!" We love making letter pretzels, and thumbprints cookies are always fun. Also thumbprint art is a blast! We've done bees, ladybugs and more. BTW, I'm allergic to dairy too, but it doesn't bother me if it is raw milk products. Thanks so much for the fun idea!
