March 20, 2011

oh me oh my

Yeah. Remember our pretty garden? Well, that disappeared very quickly once the fall/winter rains hit and we got pretty busy, then the weeds took over. We simply let everything go as we got busy and we just never planted for the winter, so we figured we would just get our summer harvest ready once March came around. It is March now and my friend asked to have her wedding shower here next month for about 100 people so um... yeah, we better get started cleaning.

Here are some before pictures:

Luckily Friday, I finished my end of taxes early, then went to work in the backyard right away. I spent a bit of time on Friday doing some major hacking and pulling. Then on Saturday, I spent all afternoon into the evening doing more pulling, but also did some digging and planting. I love getting my hands all grubby in the soil. It feels so good to be outside gardening. I can't say I am great at it, but I really do love it.

I was so exhausted Saturday night and could not move after I came in and took a nice warm shower. All I wanted to do was lay there and I didn't even want to eat! It was a good kind of exhausting though. I am so thankful that my horrible morning sickness days are behind me and I can get out and be useful again (here's to answering emails next)!

While I pulled weeds I was thinking about how I ought to get rid of things that hinder me from my walk with God. While planting new flowers, I was thinking about how God got everything right the first time he created everything. There was no trial and error for Him. Lastly, gardening was such a good reminder to me to enjoy the Creator more than the creation. These are just more tidbits of my heart and thinking.

I have yet to take after pictures because I am so not done. Rains were due on Sunday, so I wanted to make sure to get as much planting in on Saturday. I can't wait for the rains to stop because I need to go to the nursery and get more plants. I plan to get back out this week to do more gardening. Spring... here we come!!!

Tell me what your weekend was like.

  1. I would love to be able to garden right now. I used to help my grandma every year...at the time I loathed it thinking more of it as a job or chore, but now I love to do it. Cant wait to see the after photos.

Our weekend was filled with lots of company and laughter. It was a good one. It's been pouring rain since about 7 pm and we have flood warnings.

  5. i hear you on the gardening! it's one of the most restorative, grounding things for me to do. i found myself in the garden at 730 on saturday night and hubs knew to just let me be, crazily repotting and throwing seeds about for winter flowers. i had that crazed glint in my eye that says, "mama really needs her downtime."

despite being on the other side of the world to you, the weather sounds remarkably similar! Rainy McRainathon!

  6. This post makes me itch to get gardening - I can almost taste those tomatoes. :)

This weekend, my husband and I were able to go to "A Weekend to Remember" marriage conference by Family Life. Thankfully my parents were able to watch our four lovlies because the conference was a big refreshment.

  7. My weekend was filled with peace. My husband and I have been struggling with having another child and it really has been weighing me down. On Saturday I was complaining to God how it is not fair etc etc. God spoke to me simply saying he would not give me more than I could handle. Right now my husband is working A LOT so I thought about it and realized maybe now isnt the best time to be focusing on that and I need to enjoy my daughter. When Im ready to handle another child, God will be there. :)

Sorry for the very long comment. I also LOVE gardening.

  8. I am a very new reader of your blog, and I am enjoying it so much. It is so nice to see a sister in Christ online, and someone who is so honest and open about her beliefs. As a relatively private person, I'm having a hard time knowing when/how to bridge that gap in my quilting/sewing blog. you and your honesty are a breath of fresh air. :)

  11. When I was pregnant with my son, the first thing I did once that horrible horrible morning sickness was gone, was to weed our garden. I love gardening too! It 's so relaxing to me! It gives you time to just think about things :) Good luck with your garden! I'm sure it will be beautiful for the shower!

  12. I recently took up gardening and, although, I'm not great at it either, it's super rewarding and relaxing to be out there with nature and especially getting your kids involved. One of my sons loves to garden so we hang out in the backyard all the time. It's been constant rain up here in the Bay Area though so although everything is lush and green, it's tough to get out there and dig around. Can't wait to see how your garden turns out for next month!
